The Psychology of Poker

As much as poker is a game of luck, it is also a thinking man's game and it is for this reason why psychology plays an integral part in every player's poker strategy.

The psychology of poker is an essential element of the game. You must consider not only your assumptions regarding what your opponents' hands are, but also what your opponents assume regarding your hand and what they assume about what you assume about their hand.

Thought processes such as this are effective against fine players in particular. However, the better the player, the more intricate the method of figuring them out will be. Instead of figuring out players through psychology in high-level games, one should rely on other techniques such as game theory when playing as the thought processes that would be needed to figure out such first-rate opponents will be too complex and impractical to use in an expert level competition.

Likewise, it will also be unwise to use psychology when playing against ineffective players. Analysis of such players through thought processes will not be of any use as such players are not capable of thinking in advanced stages of poker strategies and are weak in making the right decisions making their game style erratic which in turn will be a difficult one to read and understand. Playing with a basic and clear-cut poker style will be the best options against such weak players.

Reflecting on what your opponent is thinking is a surefire way to develop one's calling and betting skills. If you know that your opponent assumes you will call the bet, then you can be sure that that opponent is not bluffing; if on the other hand you know that your opponent assumes you will fold on the bet then you will know that it is likely that the opponent is bluffing.

Similarly, if you know that your opponents assume that you have a strong hand then you'll know that it will be good for you to bluff while you will know better not to do so if you know that your opponents assume that you have a weak hand.

Poker psychology can also be used to affect the thinking of opponents for future hands. Altering your level of play through intentionally making bad plays every so often will condition the minds of your opponents to take advantage of you in future rounds not knowing that they will be the ones that will be taken advantage of.

The psychology of poker is the means in getting into the heads of one's opponents, studying and understanding how their thoughts process for the purpose of taking advantage of it in every play. It plays an important part in poker like in other thinking games as one will have a considerable advantage when one has the psychological edge.
